Crafting My Vision: The Journey of Writing a Brand Plan

"Creativity is how I share my soul with the world." -Brene Brown

This quote resonates deeply with me, especially as I expand FinishYourCrafts.com. The world of crafting, gardening, and DIY projects has always been my sanctuary—where I can express myself and create beauty from simple materials. But turning that passion into a brand took more than creativity—it took a plan.

Clarifying My Brand Ideas

The first step was to clarify my brand idea. I’ve always loved creating unique pieces with yarn, textiles, paint, recycled goods, and vintage finds. From knitting intricate blankets to upcycling old furniture, my creations reflect a story of transformation and care.

Sharing this passion through my website, YouTube channel, and social media made sense. Writing a brand plan helped define my mission: to inspire creativity, use high-quality materials, and build a community of like-minded makers.

Mapping Out My Strategy

With my vision in place, I outlined a strategy to reach my goals. This included defining my audience, highlighting what makes my brand unique, and setting SMART goals.

One example is my “Featured Projects” YouTube series, where I showcase finished pieces and the techniques behind them. I also create Inspiration Boards—visual collections of colors, tools, and materials—to help guide and inspire others.

These efforts stay true to my brand’s values and ensure I’m creating engaging, helpful content.

Seeking Funding and Investment

A solid brand plan also helps when seeking support or funding. While I’ve been self-funding my business, I wanted to outline future revenue streams—from YouTube ad revenue and product sales to sponsored content.

Even though I plan to stay self-funded for now, having a clear path forward gives me flexibility and shows others what’s possible.

Identifying Potential Challenges

Every business faces challenges, and crafting is no exception. By writing a brand plan, I identified potential obstacles and developed strategies to overcome them.

For example, one challenge I faced was fluctuating material costs, which affected my pricing. To overcome this, I started buying materials in bulk during sales when I had a large project planned. Calculating the materials needed for a project is essential to prevent overspending. Additionally, I compared different companies to determine the best value and quality of materials. This approach helped me manage costs and maintain consistent pricing for my products.

Creating a Roadmap for the Future

A brand plan gives me a compass when things feel overwhelming. It helps me focus on where I want to go and how to get there.

My goals for the next year include:

  • Launching an online pop-up store
  • Batching YouTube videos (2–3 per week)
  • Publishing a quarterly newsletter on Substack
  • Creating podcasts and YouTube Shorts

These milestones keep me moving forward with purpose and excitement.
